Durante este trabajo, exploramos varios trabajos por autores come Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Laura Esquivel, y Isabelle Allende, incluyendo Como Agua Para Chocolate y Dos Palabras. During this project, we explored several works by authors such as Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Laura Esquivel and Isabelle Allende including Como Agua Para Chocolate y Dos Palabras. We learned about the components of magical realism, as well as the challenge in defining magical realism. The project culminated into a written piece, and I chose to do a literary analysis of La Noche Boca Arriba, a short story that we read towards the end of the project.
My literary analysis looked at the relationship between the world with the Aztecs and the world with the hospital in relationship to the protagonist. I evaluated the similarities and differences between the two, including the smell and atmosphere. I also highlighted the hints that foreshadow the twist at the end of the story.

Literary Analysis
La Noche Boca Arriba is a story that draws connections between two worlds in a unique way. In the story, a man is taken to a hospital after getting in a motorcycle accident. When he arrives at the hospital, he slips in and out of dream in which he is running through a forest trying to escape the Aztecans. Throughout his dream, they are trying to capture him and use him for sacrificial purposes. At the end of the story, it is revealed that he is actually dreaming about being in the hospital, and that he is experiencing what is happening in the Aztecan temple once he is captured.
Several different themes are present in both the narrator’s dream and his experience in the hospital. First, the narrator notices that he can smell in his dream, and speaks about the smell of war. The smell that characterizes war can be compared to the smells of the hospital. In both, there is a very obvious smell of blood, among other bodily substances. Along with the smell, the atmosphere in both can be similar, especially if the hospital is busy. There can be misery and sadness, but also hope and victory. In the narrator’s dream, he references las guerras floridas, or flower wars, which were in essence an agreement between two rival tribes to fight and therefore provide victims to either tribe. These victims would then be used for sacrifice. In this way, the tribes could sacrifice individuals without having to pull victims from their own population.
The author makes several different connections between the dream and real life that insinuates that the two worlds are deeply connected. For example, the tribe that the narrator is from, who is enemies with the Aztecs, is called the Motecans. The Motecans were not a real tribe, which makes one think that the name had an alternative meaning. The prefix in Motecans is similar to that in motorcycle, because their first syllables sound the same. Although this is not a hint towards what happens at the end of the story, it is a relation that could signify a deeper connection between the two worlds.
The deeper connection becomes apparent right before the author reveals the twist at the end of the story. When the author writes, “Cada vez que se abrían buscando era la noche y la luna mientras lo subían la escalinata,” it gives away that something has changed. As of now, the narrator cannot wake up from his “dream,” but can smell and sense everything that is going on around him at that point in time. Once it becomes obvious that these characteristics are not typical for a dream, one begins to recocnize the inevitable end of the story.
Throughout La Noche Boca Arriba, the author makes subtle statements that hint towards the big twist at the end of the story. Whether it be through making connections in the words, providing details that are not typical for a dream, or changing a setting, he eventually ties everything together to make the switch between worlds realistic, and keeps the reader wondering when the switch happened, or if there was a switch at all. This is an excellent story that fuses two worlds together using magical realism and the mystery of dreams.
